5.4 Interpret students data

I use student’s assessment data to analyse and evaluate their understanding of subject/content, identifying interventions and modifying teaching practice.

I have included one of my marks tables that I used for my Year 8 Maths class.

I have also included some graphs that I used to help interpret the students’ results.

This helped me to identify which quiz the students struggled the most with and therefore how I needed to modify my practice to go over what they hadn’t learnt. I was also able to see the number of students who received certain grades and where students were clustered. There were quite a few students who got a score between 80-90%, a few in the high 60’s and 50’s.

Year 8 MATHS

I have also included my marks table for my Year 11 Biology class and this helped me to see students’ strengths and where they needed extra guidance. It is possible to see that some students found the quickies challenging including Jordan who received less than 50% for both quizzes. Hannah also struggled with the first quiz.

From the graph included in the Excel spreadsheet it is possible to see that Caleb and Hannah did much better on their second Quickie, however Ryan K did worse on his second quickie. Nonetheless, everyone passed the final unit test which is pleasing. We definitely covered and went over the content that they struggled with initially.

With my Year 7 class I also often make annotated notes on where they are struggling. I can then look to see any general trends and gaps in students’ knowledge. This then helps to inform me of the content that I need to review.

Assessing student learning also allows us as teachers to see what students learnt well and therefore what areas we may have taught well. See the improvement scores for Mathematics:

Some students have shown incredible improvement from the pre-test to post-test and most did improve notably.
